Acts 17:10-12 "That very night the believers sent Paul and Silas to Berea. When they arrived there, they went to the synagogue. And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul's message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to check up on Paul and Silas, to see if they were really teaching the truth. As a result, many Jews believed, as did some of the prominent Greek women and many men."
Acts (NIV) 17:11 says, "Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true."
It is okay to check up and question what you are receiving. We should do this as Believers to make sure that what we are receiving is the Truth. How do we do this? Just as the Bereans did. Examine the scriptures every day to see if what is said is true. Paul was okay with it.
1 John 4:1 "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world."
Matt. 24:24 "For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect–if that were possible."
I read recently that in order to train bank tellers how to recognize a counterfeit dollar bill, they will train with the real thing so that when a counterfeit one comes along they will recognize it immediately. How do we recognize a false teacher or a false prophet? We study the Word daily daily daily — so that when the counterfeit jesus comes along we will recognize it immediately. We don't just accept all of them just because they say jesus, because Paul warns us of those coming preaching a different Jesus. Paul says 2 Cor. 11:3-4 "But I fear that somehow you will be led away from your pure and simple devotion to Christ, just as Eve was deceived by the serpent. You seem to believe whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach about a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed."
Galatians 1:6-9 Paul says "I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, Who in his love and mercy called you to share the eternal life He gives through Christ. You are already following a different way that pretends to be the Good News but is not the Good News at all. You are being fooled by those who twist and change the truth concerning Christ. Let God's curse fall on anyone, including myself, who preaches any other message than the one we told you about. Even if an angel comes from heaven and preaches any other message, let him be forever cursed." (WHOA!)
Interestingly enough, Paul named names even of those who he believed should not be listened to. Interesting that he should do that. We should do the same. We should sound the alarm, and stop sitting idly by while wolves in sheep clothing are out running around.
