Search Your Scriptures to See If You Are Getting the Truth

Acts 17:10-12 "That very night the believers sent Paul and Silas to Berea.  When they arrived there, they went to the synagogue.  And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul's message.  They searched the Scriptures day after day to check up on Paul and Silas, to see if they were really teaching the truth.  As a result, many Jews believed, as did some of the prominent Greek women and many men."

Acts (NIV) 17:11 says, "Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true."

It is okay to check up and question what you are receiving.  We should do this as Believers to make sure that what we are receiving is the Truth.  How do we do this?  Just as the Bereans did.  Examine the scriptures every day to see if what is said is true.  Paul was okay with it.

1 John 4:1 "Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world."

Matt. 24:24 "For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect–if that were possible."

I read recently that in order to train bank tellers how to recognize a counterfeit dollar bill, they will train with the real thing so that when a counterfeit one comes along they will recognize it immediately.  How do we recognize a false teacher or a false prophet?  We study the Word daily daily daily — so that when the counterfeit jesus comes along we will recognize it immediately.  We don't just accept all of them just because they say jesus, because Paul warns us of those coming preaching a different Jesus.  Paul says 2 Cor. 11:3-4 "But I fear that somehow you will be led away from your pure and simple devotion to Christ, just as Eve was deceived by the serpent.  You seem to believe whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach about a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed."

Galatians 1:6-9 Paul says "I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, Who in his love and mercy called you to share the eternal life He gives through Christ.  You are already following a different way that pretends to be  the Good News but is not the Good News at all.  You are being fooled by those who twist and change the truth concerning Christ.  Let God's curse fall on anyone, including myself, who preaches any other message than the one we told you about.  Even if an angel comes from heaven and preaches any other message, let him be forever cursed."  (WHOA!)

Interestingly enough, Paul named names even of those who he believed should not be listened to.  Interesting that he should do that.  We should do the same.  We should sound the alarm, and stop sitting idly by while wolves in sheep clothing are out running around.

  1. I worked as a teller prior to my becoming a loan officer and the class was just that. Looking at the original and then comparing the counterfeit. In doing this you can spot the differences almost immediately.
This is an amazing post. Thank you for sharing Gods Word.
I was talking to a friend and asking why no one wants to call out a false prophet or wolf in this case to warn others and she mentioned that we must be cautious because if we are wrong then we will stand before God on Judgment Day.
My question is what if we are right………….we will still stand before God on Judgment Day. Ezek 33:6-8 comes to mind about the watchman.
I keep saying God help us, but He already has by giving us His Word and then to top it off His Precious Holy Spirit. Ugh! God Help Us!!!!

  2. Deb — thank you for your comment — and thank you for the other emails also — wow — amazing that we are on the same page. I am surprised by a lot of the deception that is going on myself — and even more surprised that more Christians are so willing to stand by and do nothing. We do not embrace everything just because it says jesus — we must TEST TEST TEST — Paul did and warned us of these things to come. Ez. 33:3 is the scripture that the Lord gave Joe recently about the watchman — if the watchman does not sound the warning, it comes back on the watchman — if the watchman sounds the warning and people don't listen, it comes back on them. We are starting the sound the warning — we have been very prayerful about each thing the Lord has shown us — and pray that we are hearing Him correctly. Thank you for your encouragement Deb. I appreciate it!

  3. Even though we, as Christians can have some "inhouse" differences on doctinal issues, we should be able to discern the wolves in sheep's clothing. Only by knowing what the Bible really says – for ourselves – can we hope to spot the counterfit teaching.

  4. Amen! What I've come to learn recently is that there are some things that we can agree to disagree, and then there are those doctrinal truths that we must hold fast to — belief in the Trinity for one. I am in the learning process (of course always), but want to share as I learn. Thank you for reading!

  5. Thank you for this post……..I enjoyed every word. It reminded me of some that i know of in the past who were drawn away because of "false" teachers…….I am also reminded of a time back when my precious grandmother (a widowed Pastor's wife) who was keeping a stack of material (I won't name names) from a group (again, I won't mention names) that she should have never accepted from them when they came to her door……..I asked why she was keeping it…& she said "I'm afraid to throw it away because it has "scripture" on it." I think she thought she would be committing some awful sin if she threw it away. I told her that even the devil knew the scripture and could use it for his good if people let him. She said she didn't want anyone who might not know the Lord to get a hold of this literature and read it, thus turning away from the one true God……and that was why she kept it. (smile)

  6. I love it when people come to my door — and occasionally the Lord brings them — and I get to share the gospel with them. That always fires my husband up. I remember one time they came and he wasn't home, and he was so bummed because he loves to talk to them. I figure I pray that the Lord brings divine appointments, and so when they come, I want to be ready to give them the message that Jesus wants them to hear — the TRUTH about Jesus Christ. Then I pray for them — and just trust the Lord to take care of the rest. Your grandmother sounds like a sweet woman. 🙂 Blessings to you today, and thanks for commenting and stopping by!

  7. There is always the possibility that the second person in a team of two at your door is not firmly planted in the false religion. I try to stick to the basics on who Jesus is, (God) and what it means to have the indwelling Holy Spirit to help me live for God through Christ. (Trinity)
For those who are not mature enough in the faith to do this, it is quite alright to just tell them thank you but no thank you.

  8. Amen! The funny thing is that one time one came to my door, and by the way he was talking I thought he was a Christian, so I just talked to him as though he was another Believer in Christ — I believe the Lord allowed me to believe that so that I would speak the words He wanted me to say because I just showered him with all sorts of great words of the Lord — it was all uplifting and sharing my testimony with him and what Christ had done for me — so at the end of me sharing I finally said "so what church do you go to?" I went back inside and started laughing, and thanked the Lord for using me because I found such joy in sharing the gospel of Christ. I continue to pray for him whenever I think of him.

  9. 1 Peter 3:15Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
    And you certainly did!
